Rejuvenate Your Lawn This Fall with Aeration and Overseeding Services

This year’s significant drought has damaged lawns across Ohio and Northern West Virginia, leading to compacted soil and stressed grass. At Parsons Lawn Works, we understand the unique challenges homeowners face in maintaining a healthy lawn under these conditions. That’s why we’re offering specialized lawn aeration and overseeding services to restore vitality to your turf this fall.

Why Aeration Matters After a Drought

Drought conditions speed up soil compaction, making it difficult for water, air, and nutrients to reach the grass roots. Aeration is the key component in reversing this damage. By perforating the soil, our aeration services:

  1. Improve Nutrient Uptake: Allow essential nutrients and water to penetrate deep into the root zone.

  2. Enhance Soil Structure: Promote healthier root growth and overall soil health.

  3. Reduce Thatch Buildup: Help decompose thatch layers, preventing disease and pest issues.

  4. Boost Lawn Resilience: Strengthen your lawn’s ability to withstand future stresses.

  5. Improve Water Retention: Help the ground retain moisture more effectively, which is crucial after a drought.

The Ideal Time for Aeration

For Ohio Valley lawns, fall is the perfect time for aeration, especially after a drought. The cooler temperatures and increased rainfall help grass recover and thrive. Cool-season grasses, such as fescue and bluegrass, particularly benefit from fall aeration, as they enter their peak growing period.

Overseeding: The Perfect Companion to Aeration

Following aeration, overseeding is essential for filling in bare spots and enhancing the overall density of your lawn. Overseeding introduces new, resilient grass varieties that improve the appearance and health of your lawn. Overseeding helps to:

  1. Promote New Grass Growth: Ensures a thick, lush lawn by introducing new grass varieties.

  2. Prevent Weed Spread: Thicker grass crowds out weeds, reducing their chances to establish.

  3. Improve Disease Resistance: Diverse grass species help reduce the risk of disease outbreaks.

Our Aeration and Seeding Process

Parsons Lawn Works uses commercial core aeration equipment to remove small plugs of soil, ensuring maximum effectiveness. We follow up with slice seeding, a highly effective overseeding method.

Here’s how we do it:

  1. Preparation: Before aeration, your yard needs to be mowed to an optimal height and cleared of debris. If needed, we offer mowing and cleanup services for an additional charge to ensure your lawn is perfectly prepared. In addition, before aeration begins, we walk the property with the client and mark any obstacles in the yard to ensure a safe and seamless process.

  2. Aeration: We make multiple passes with our aerator to ensure even coverage.

  3. Post-Aeration Care: Soil plugs can be left on the lawn to break down naturally or removed based on the client’s preference for an extra fee.

  4. Seeding: Our slice seeding machine creates tiny furrows in the soil and deposits seeds directly into them, ensuring optimal soil-to-seed contact and improving germination rates.

  5. Post-Seeding Care: It is important to ensure the lawn receives between 1/2 - 1 inch of water each week (including rain). This will ensure consistent germination and initial growth of new turf seed.
