Spring Has Sprung: Time to Kick Off Mowing Season Right

Grass Mowing Spring Ohio

The grass is green, the days are getting longer, and spring is officially here in the Ohio Valley—which means the mowing season has begun! At Parsons Lawn Works, we’re already out in full force, helping our customers get a strong start to the growing season. If you’re managing your own yard or considering professional help, now is the perfect time to set the tone for a healthy, great-looking lawn all year long.

Lawn Care Basics: Start the Season Strong

A well-maintained lawn doesn't happen by accident—it takes timing, technique, and a little TLC. Here are some important things to keep in mind as you start mowing this spring:

1. Mow at the Right Height

Cutting your grass too short (also known as scalping) can stress your turf and leave it vulnerable to weeds, drought, and disease. For cool-season grasses common in our region, a mowing height of 3 to 3.5 inches is ideal. Taller grass develops deeper roots, shades out weeds, and holds moisture better.

2. Mow Frequently, But Don’t Overdo It

You should never remove more than one-third of the grass blade at a time. That usually means mowing once every 5–7 days during peak growth in spring. Waiting too long between mows can shock the grass and create unsightly clumps. Consistency is key!

3. Keep Those Blades Sharp

A dull mower blade tears the grass rather than cutting it cleanly, which can leave the lawn looking brown and ragged. Sharpen your mower blades at least a couple of times during the season to promote a clean, healthy cut.

Lawn Care Do's and Don'ts

DO:

  • Water early in the morning (if needed), about 1 inch per week total, including rainfall.

  • Fertilize at the right time, ideally in late spring for a good green-up.

  • Leave grass clippings on the lawn (mulching), as they return valuable nutrients to the soil.

DON’T:

  • Mow when the lawn is wet—it causes uneven cutting, clumping, and potential ruts.

  • Use a “one size fits all” approach to lawn care. Your lawn’s needs change throughout the season.

  • Neglect your mower. Routine maintenance extends its life and ensures better results.
